Solar 4 Students

The lack of electricity is a barrier to progressing at school and so Edukid has developed projects that provide clean, sustainable light.

Solar 4 Students

As part of Edukid’s aim to break down the barriers to education, we focus on clean, sustainable energy to children and their families.

One thing that the countries we work in have in common is lots of sunshine! We are using this natural resource to provide light to the children we work with through solar panels that can be fixed to the top of the roofs and can provide up to 8 hours of light for the 12 hours that it is dark.

We have developed the Solar 4 Students project to provide light to children in poverty. Through this project, we aim to create an environment where they can concentrate on their studies and achieve their dreams.

To the children in the Edukid projects, light means everything!

More precious hours in a busy small day

Being able to do homework once it gets dark

Better grades and school attendance

Being safe to move around after dark

Improved health and hapiness

The opportunity to dream of a brighter future

Our work in Uganda

Being a country on the equator, Uganda sees the sun go down each day at 6:30 PM. All of the families we work with live in bandas (mud huts), with no electricity, and so once the sun goes down it is pitch black. This means that the children we support are simply unable to study after school.

Some families use paraffin candles to light up their homes so that their children can do their homework, this produces a dim light. The candles often cause more issues, as the banda’s have poor ventilation and so the fumes cause damage to the children’s lungs. The candles also pose as a fire hazard to the straw roofing of the family home.

Our work in Peru

Many students in our projects in Peru stay after school to study and receive extra help from their teachers. However, the lack of electricity forces many children to study in the dark or use dangerous alternatives like paraffin or burning plastic for light. Additionally, it can be unsafe for the children to move between the village and the school once it is dark.

Through our Solar 4 Students programme, Edukid is working with local schools to provide solar lighting for classrooms. With extended study hours, students can complete homework after dark leading to improved grades and better school attendance.

The programme also ensures that students can move home safely by installing solar lighting along the pathway that connects the schools to the village.
