Our work in Uganda

Our projects in Uganda focus on breaking down the barriers to education for children living in poverty.

History of our work in Uganda

Edukid started work in Northern Uganda in 2008 – just 9 months after the 21 year child soldier civil war finished. Tens of thousands of children returned from the bush, many finding they were orphans, or had no family members. Numerous girls also returned with siblings, meaning many were children-led families with no homes to return to or source of income.

Edukid helps children falling within six categories: former child soldiers; abductees; orphans; child-led families, those with HIV/AIDS and those living in chronic poverty.

In Uganda, education is not free, and families are required to pay school fees, which creates a significant barrier to learning. Edukid help support school fees, and provide the school resources such as uniform, stationary and books. We support students from primary right through to university – however far they want to go on their journey of education.

Our work is a partnership

We believe that sustainable, effective support for students must be shaped by those who truly understand the local context. That’s why we partner with CIFORD – a trusted, community-based organisation in northern Uganda. CIFORD’s team lives and works within the community, building relationships and gaining a genuine understanding of the daily challenges and opportunities faced by the young people we support.

Rather than imposing outside or ‘Western’ solutions, we are committed to listening to and learning from local voices. By working with CIFORD, we ensure that our projects are culturally relevant, respectful, and based on the real needs identified by the community itself. This partnership model helps ensure long-term impact, as the support we offer is built on local knowledge, trust, and mutual respect.
