Gender Equality

Edukid believes that every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive, and we are committed to breaking down the barriers that stand in their way.

Girls right to an education

The girls we support in Uganda, Cambodia, and Peru face additional challenges to accessing quality education, challenges that are often different from those experienced by boys. From limited educational opportunities to cultural and societal expectations, these obstacles can significantly hinder their progress.

Edukid provides educational support for the girls, from primary school all the way up to university and vocational training. We also provide wider support to ensure that girls feel safe, valued, and happy in their school environments.

Programmes Targeted to Community Needs

The challenges faced by girls in each of the countries we work in are different. We strive to break down the barriers to education by working with local, community based organisations to develop effective and sustainable solutions.

Our work in Uganda

In Uganda, many girls face deep-rooted challenges when it comes to accessing education. In a society that often favours boys, girls are frequently expected to stay home, marry young, or contribute to household work instead of continuing their studies. Long, unsafe journeys to school and the stigma surrounding pregnancy further prevent many from returning to the classroom, leaving them vulnerable and excluded.

Edukid is working to remove these barriers by creating safe and supportive opportunities for girls to learn.

Our work in Cambodia

We are committed to empowering girls in Cambodia by providing essential support that helps break down cultural barriers to education. Many girls are expected to stay at home, work, or care for their families instead of attending school. To address this, we supply school packs filled with the tools they need to learn, along with hygiene workshops that promote health and confidence, helping girls stay in school longer.

Beyond primary education, we continue to support girls through access to university, giving them the opportunity to shape their futures and become leaders in their communities. By investing in their education, we aim to challenge traditional beliefs and create lasting change for the next generation of Cambodian girls.

Our work in Peru

We work with many vulnerable girls in Peru who are at high risk of child marriage, domestic violence, abuse and teenage pregnancy. We discovered many of the girls, as young as primary school age, were living alone and without adults in Imacita. Hunger is also a daily reality, with many girls lacking access to regular, nutritious meals, which further impacts their health and ability to learn.

Edukid has responded to this reality by developing the newest project: The Girls Shelter. All too often, females are the lowest priority when it comes to education. The Girls Shelter will provide a safe place for some of the most vulnerable young girls; a space where they can learn and thrive, free from risks of domestic violence, abuse and child marriage. Alongside this, we have also introduced a school feeding programme to ensure all girls get access to daily, nutritious meals every day!
