About Us

The Edukid community is made up of people from all across the world who make a difference and leave a lasting legacy.  Find out how we got started.

Who are Edukid?

Edukid is a UK registered charity that helps to remove the barriers to education faced by children living in poverty and conflict.

Edukid believes all children have the right to attend school and that education is a long-term solution to enabling communities to break out of their cycle of poverty.

Since 2003 Edukid has been a platform for hope, equal rights, opportunity and inclusive education. We work with local communities to develop sustainable ways to improve their quality of life.

We currently support over 3500 children living in poverty in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and South America.

We have three main goals:

To provide education to children who live in chronic poverty. We support students from primary school all the way up to university and vocational training.

To break down the barriers to education that these children face. This is done by working with local communities to find sustainable models of addressing the issues children face.

To empower a new generation of change makers willing to stand up against injustice, promote equal rights and eradicate poverty.

The history of Edukid

The official version:

In 2003 Chris Turner, a Youth and Community Worker, travelled with young people from Oxford to Cambodia. They wanted to support a friend who was volunteering in remote villages along the Mekong River. There was no clean drinking water, little access to medical care and the poverty shocked them.

Friendships were born and the group asked the community what they could do to help. The villagers wanted help sending their children to school. Shocked to learn that despite school being free, families couldn’t afford a uniform, pencils and books, they returned home to share their story and Edukid was born.

The unofficial version:

When does our journey in life start?

The people that raise us, teach us and influence us, help form our beliefs and values. Without this upbringing would Edukid ever have started? It’s through friendship, love and sharing that Edukid started and it’s through this same relational approach that we hope Edukid will grow.

We acknowledge all the people along the way that led to Edukid. We acknowledge our spiritual journey leading us. We celebrate the children in our overseas programmes who educate us and the friendships that facilitate this change.
